See Ya Next Year Florida

We are finally home from our Florida trip. We had such a great time!!! :) Peyton really loves the sand and water now. Which means that we all got a dark tan from being in the sun so much! We played all day on the bay side beach or walked across the street to the Gulf side. So we had a lot of sand play. I have a little brown baby now (with a little white butt). And to think he got this tan with sunscreen of 50 SPF. HA! Kevin and I was a little worried that with the new enviroment Peyton would give us problems with the sleeping arrangements. But from being in the sun all day long, Peyton was taking three hour naps and was ready for bed by 8:00. Which was so great for Kevin and I! We had so much free time to nap ourselves and lounge around. For the 4th of July we watched the fireworks from the boardwalk and we even got to watch the Blue Angels practice for their show. Their air practice was right above our condo. THAT was so cool to watch.

You know me that I have 1001 pictures, but here are a few of our trip:

  1. Great pictures! glad y'all had fun and are home safe?

Random photo question. Your pictures always seem so bright. Do you photoshop them or is that the original photo? If you do, can you please pass on your secrets!?

  2. Blair,

I only shoot pictures in RAW. After downloading pictures, I then adjust the picture's colors to my likings with Nikon Raw 4.5 program that was included with my Nikon package. I only use my photoshop to edit red eye if any, crop and save. I find that to get more brightness to your pictures, adjust the blacks, exposure, vibrance and saturation.

  5. I want your camera!! Is that the original lens that came with the kit?

How large are the RAW files?

  6. Okay well I still want your camera- or specifically the lens! I am so ordering one this weekend.

  7. Which lens do you use? I am on the hunt for a new one. I think I want a 35mm, but not 100% sold on that.

I read up a bit on RAW files and the website said that 1) RAW files are big, 2) it might slow your camera down while the large image transfers to the file (do you find this? that seems like a big drawback for me) and 3) they suggest you convert all RAW files to .jpgs since the programs that read RAW files might change/go away as technology changes (same as you can't find computers to read floppy disks anymore).

Do you change all your files over? Is it worth the extra steps?

I love how you have more control over your pictures, I am just scared of adding yet another step to my photos.

Your beach pictures just seem so much sharper than mine do. But maybe if I tweaked mine to sharpen in my editing software mine would be too? I need to take a photography class!

  8. Blair,

I bought the Nikon AF-S DX VR 55-200mm F4-5.6G lens and it is awesome! Yes, I change all my pictures over to tiff or jpeg once I adjust the coloring to my liking then delete the RAW file. However, my absolute favorite pictures I save as tiff and keep the RAW file in case I want to go back and change the colors to b&w, etc. I have very few absolute favorites.

I read that the problem with having the camera save your pictures to jpeg is that the picture is then compressed, and to me the picture does not look as sharp. With RAW, the picture is sharper and you can do what you like with it. Now, if I was taking pictures of a sporting event, I would take it under the FINE (less compression) mode because RAW does slow the camera down. But definitely not enough that you can't take RAW pictures of the girls when they are playing together, etc. Just don't take 100 pictures :) It is all about personal preference I guess. Personally I think the extra step is worth it because you have control of how the picture turns out instead of letting the camera do it for you. If you let the camera do it for you, then there is only so much you can do with your shot with photoshop.

  9. Ha! Good luck getting me to take less than 100 pictures at anything! I might give it a try at the beach. All my pictures are in FINE mode with medium size.

I am going to try to take a class in the fall when the girls are in school. I don't really know enough about photoshop and editing programs yet to feel comfortable with me doing most of the editing.

Thanks for the advice and tips. One day I will stop making my camera do all the work!
